Top basketball teams face off this Saturday in a pre-season derby
The Trofeo Costa Adeje, this Saturday (8pm) will see the two top Canarian teams, Iberostar Tenerife and Herbalife Gran Canaria, face each other in the first derby of the season.
Launching details of the match, to be held in the Las Torres pavilion, were Adeje sports councillor Adolfo Alonso Ferrrera, Roberto Konrad from Tenerife Top Training, and Iberostar Tenerife president Felix Hernández.
Both teams have enjoyed a headline grabbing season in 2016/2017, with the Tenerife side classifying for the Kings Cup and the title play-offs with the icing on the cake being victory in the Basket Champions League Final Four. The Gran Canarian side were crowned European Supercup champions. And while Saturday’s game may be a friendly, there is a healthy rivalry between the two sides. “The game has become a fixed part of the national pre-season calendar”, said Adolfo Alonso and Iberostar’s Felix Hernández. The councillor added that these kind of sporting events were very important for Adeje, and thanked both sides for bringing the derby to the borough for the second year in a row.
Tickets for the game are at “affordable prices, as we want to ensure that fans can come and see the game”, added Adolfo Alonso, with the sports department also announcing an increase in seating for the match. Hernández said this was a very important tournament for the players and the public, given that this year they would be seeing the Champions League title holders play the European Super Cup winners, here in Adeje. “Despite the fact that this is a pre-season game we have spent weeks in preparation to guarantee the public that they will see a top class sporting event”.
Hernández detailed too how many of this year’s new season tickets holders were from the south of the island –more than in previous years, “proof that the team is consolidating its base here in the south”.
Roberto Konrad said Tenerife Top Training was delighted to be the sponsors of the match. “Our doors are always open to Iberostar Tenerife. Being able to sponsor events of this kind is part of our commitment to sports in general.”
The match will also be broadcast on Television Canarias on Sunday September 3rd at 11.25am.
