Street theatre, flamenco and much more

Classic theatre and dance are at the core of the XIX Adeje Festival

The official launch of the Adeje Festival of Theatre and Dance was held yesterday in the presence of many of the participating artists and directors, led by Adeje cultural councillor Adolfo Alonso Ferrera. The festival is taking place in parallel with the borough’s food festival, which is no coincidence, “as both festivals complement each other”, said the councillor. “The council are always stressing the importance of the people of our borough, and today we are offering a cultural menu, hopeful something that will contribute to the wellbeing of the local residents. I am speaking from two premises, firstly, that culture isn’t a cost, but an investment, and secondly, that culture is worth much more than is spent on it. From the council’s point of view, our objective is that we can guarantee a regular programme of theate and dance throughout the year ensuring that culture isn’t just for the few but will reach as many people as possible.”

Among the works on offer is one which should be of particular interest to the British residents and the visiting public, and is being staged to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare. Romeo and Juliet will be acted out along Adeje’s main streets on Friday November 11th from 6.30, “and will include opera and dance”, according to the Burka Teatro director Nacho Almenar. And while the words spoken will be in Spanish, “we have chosen one of Shakepeare’s most famous works”, so the action will be easy to follow. This is free to the public and apt for all the family.

All other shows are taking place in the Adeje Cultural Centre, starting with dance in its purest flamenco form which kicks off the festival on November 4th, 9pm. Corazón Elefante is on Friday November 28th, Bernarda, by the Delirium Teatro company takes to the stage on Saturday November 19th, 9pm. The last weekend of the month sees Mi Lucha on Friday November 25th, and the Insularia Teatro Company present De Hombre a Hombre on Saturday November 26th.
