With Easter Week fast approaching the borough of Adeje is planning a full schedule of related events as well as making sure the 17 beaches and all of the tourist areas are in prime condition for what is a hugely busy holiday season. The religious side is also of prime concern, with solemn processions and masses taking place over the coming weeks.

One of the most popular and eagerly awaited Adeje-based events is the street performance of the last days, trial and crucifixion of Jesus Christ which takes place along the Adeje Calle Grande on Good Friday (April 14th). This event is now considered one of the key Easter events nationally.

With almost the entire cast made up of amateurs, members of the Adeje public are, as always, invited to participate and join the cast of hundreds. According to the Adeje councillor for creative development, Adolfo Alonso Ferrera, the number taking part increases every year and this year they are expecting the same – so they are calling on anyone interested to sign up now. There will be a number of rehearsals and costumes and props are supplied by the council.

To participate you would need to have some Spanish, and if you have children who would like to be in the theatrical work, those under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. The form that needs to be filled in is on the council webpage, www.adeje.es

The mayor said today Mary was a symbol for all those mothers who have lost children in Belgium, Syria…

Thousands of spectators were in Adeje today to witness the XX edition of La Pasión on the Calle Grande in Adeje. Over 300 people took part in the staging of the last days and death of Jesus Christ. The mayor congratulated the amateur actors, singling out those who played Jesus and Mary, José Antonio Lopez and Ana Oneida. “Today Mary moved me in particular, she always does, but today more than ever because she is a symbol of so many mothers who ask ‘why’, why their children have died, in an accident, or have been killed in Belgium, in Syria… Today this is happeng and this is something we need to think about”.

He also paid tribute to all those who took part in the event, actors, the director, operations and back-stage staff, security, communications, artists, sound, music, etc. Rodríguez Fraga also wanted to say to those younger people, “you have to follow this, and take part again. It’s fantastic to see our young people involved in this collective event. Apart from the faith that each one may have, we are telling a story, something that had huge implications for humanity, a story that shows the pain of treason, of death, and of love and generosity.”

The mayor, accompanied by many local councillors, including Adolfo Alonso Ferrera, head of the department of creative development, and Cristina Fuente Carballo and Desiderio Afonso Ruiz, who also took part in the street theatre, spoke of his immense pride and staging “an event of such importance”, which has now achieved international status.

The staging of La Pasión had a number of changes this year, including the addition of the two robbers crucified alongside Jesus Christ in the final scene. There were also new costumes, dances and additional music and songs, all composed by members of the Adeje School of Music.
This event has been taking place annually in Adeje since 1996, and began with a small group of Adeje residents staging the representation. It has grown over the years into the prestigious staging that is is today.

The Passion and Death of Jesus Christ

_DSC6360-w1500

This Good Friday, March 25th, under the Adeje department of Creative Development with Councillor Adolfo Alonso Ferrera, the Passion and Death of Jesus Christ will be staged along the town’s Calle Grande, recreating the last days and death of Jesus of Nazareth. The event will be broadcast live on Televisión Canarias, and will also be available live via TVCanariaNet on the internet, as well as transmitted on Radio Sur Adeje 107.9fm and Canarias Radio La Autonómica.

The event will begin at 12 noon and the action will begin at the Plaza Cruz del Llano (opposite the entrance to the Adeje town primary school), and move up the Calle Grande, lasting two hours.

“Every year there is an incredible sense of anticipation around this event” said councillor Alonso. “Hundreds of people (over 300) take part and of course none of this would be possible without the commitment and dedication of the team based in the Town Hall who work to make this event so special, to the last detail, checking every stage, every costume…”.

This is the fourth year that the final part of the staging, the crucifixion, is in the Plaza de España, an amazing backdrop to this dramatic theatre, and this year, for the first time, the two thieves who were crucified alongside Jesus Christ will also be represented. With the natural backdrop of the Barranco del Infierno, the Santa Úrsula church and the Convento creating the perfect setting, it is a fitting finale to the event. The change has meant that more people can view the final scene and security levels are also increased.

_DSC6732-w1500

Adolfo Alonso added, “The staging of The Passion and Death of Jesus Christ is hugely relevant for the people of Adeje, the people of the town really feel this is their event, they are proud of the staging and proud to take part. It is something unique and very different”, he continued. Many different associations, sports clubs and businesses also take part every year.

Other changes this will year include an improved stage for the scene with Herod. All of the music is the composition of members of the Adeje School of Music, and the arrangement uses many traditional Canarian instruments – the timple, cháracas, and the drums.

The whole of the Calle Grande, from the Plaza de la Cruz del Llano to the Plaza España, will be a stage dressed to resemble the time of Our Lord, with plants, cloths, sculptures and alters, live markets with animals, etc.

During and afterwards, for those following the event, they can upload their photographs and videos to #lapasionadeje2016, helping give the event greater visibility.

The council also reminds those who are planning to attend the event to wear comfortable shoes and clothing, bring water, a sun hat and wear adequate sun cream, and make sure children are well protected. Do follow the instructions of the local police and civil protection units who are there to ensure everyone’s safety and don’t cross the temporary barriers erected to keep the streets clear for the act itself. It is also recommended that you have identification and information regarding blood group and any allergies to medicines with you in the case of an emergency or accident. Given the many thousands expected to attend, arrive in good time and when the event has concluded be prepared to wait a few minutes for the crowds to disperse.

Security during the event will be provided by the Adeje local police,

10,000 in Adeje for La Pasión

The event was broadcast live nationally on TV España
According to organisers about 10,000 people attended the XIX edition of the live representation of La Pasión yesterday, April 3rd on the Calle Grande in Adeje. The event was also broadcast live in the Canaries TV España, and viewers could also follow the event via online streaming, or listen on Radio Sur Adeje 107.9fm or Radio Nacional España.

Over 300 people took part in the event, the majority of them residents of Adeje, who played the parts of the many who followed Jesus of Nazareth during the last days of his life. The staging of La Pasión was overseen, as always, by the Adeje department of culture, under councillor for culture Nayra Medina Bethencourt and Laura Marrero, the department’s artistic director.

Adeje mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, also took part in the event and afterwards took time to congratulate the 300+ cast and crew. “Without you this would not happen, there would be no Passion Play in Adeje”, he told them. He continued, “we are not just showing the world another side of Adeje the tourist destination, we are showing a people who love and treasure their traditions, and a people who are capable of taking on any project, no matter how ambitious, and seeing it through sucessfully when we all put our minds to it.

“Every year The Passion generates new feelings and emotions for us, we see things with fresh eyes, deep sentiments are reawoken, that are much more than our religious beliefs or thoughts”.
la pasion4
This theatrical work began at 12 noon with the entrance of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem. The town was recreated on the Calle Grande with a market typical of the era, with food, animals – goats, horses, falcons, snakes, doves…. The crowd also joined in the chorus of Hosanna at the entrance of Jesus, played by José Antonio López, who has played the part for a number of years.

Following the entrance the focus shifted to The Last Supper in the plaza Cruz del Llano, followed by a meeting of Jesus with Mary Magdalene, played by Ainhoa Aguilar, a student in the municipal School of Music and Dance (EMMA) and a recent contestant on Spain’s version of The Voice. The music served to build the emotion of the scenes, and was composed for the representation by the school of music, under the direction of Juan Carlos Coronado.

The scene in the Garden of Gethsemane saw Jerusalem asleep and the kiss from Judas, who subsequently takes his own life wracked with guilt, betraying Our Lord. La Pasión then took the action to Pontius Pilate and Claudia (played by Raúl de Castro Soriano, a student in the Adeje Municipal Theatre School, Teatro UPA and María Herrera Bethencourt, a student at the EMMA), and to the palace of Herod and Herodias (played by professional actor Nacho Almenar Vera and Adeje Theatre and UPA student Nuria Mariscal). On Jesus’ return to Pontius Pilate the audience also had a chance to see the meeting between Jesus and St John (Agoney Hernández, EMMA) and the song expressing the suffering of Christ and the unconditional love of the apostle for his Lord.

Tears among participants and spectators were in evidence as Jesus was whipped and beaten and began the walk to Calvary, with the slope of the Calle Grande in Adeje towards the Plaza España lending to the realistic imagery presented.

Wearing his crown of thorns, the audience saw a bloodied Jesus Christ, in pain, falling and suffering on his way to be crucified. His mother, the Virgin Mary, played by Ana Oneida Borges, Adeje resident, accompanied him and offered words of comfort. On his way he, as was written, meets Verónica who cleans his face with a cloth.

Jesus continued on his cross-bearing way, visibly weakening, falling three times in all, until he arrives to the Plaza. The solemnity of the crucifixion was observed by the thousands present, with Jesus crying out “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do” as the nails were driven into his hands. And finally, “into your hands I commend my spirit”, and with his death the Virgin Mary gave a heartfelt emotive speech on the passing of her only son.

Once the representation was over the procession took place with the Fallen Christ brought to the Church of Santa Ursula Martír. This statue is from the 20th century, and was acquired by the Hermandad del Santisimo.

Changes
As well as the change in the direction of the overall staging, towards the Plaza España, a number of other changes this year were improvements in the stages for Herod and Pilate, with new costumes and additional props in the Jerusalem market, creating a more realistic atmosphere.

Dances from both students from EMMA as well as those from Beanky Ballet also added to the colour of the event. The participation of the EMMA musical department has also been vital, with original songs and compositions incorporating some traditional Canarian musical themes and instruments – the timple, cháracas, the drum, airs and dances add to creating the atmosphere of the era.

During the busy event there were no incidents reported to the special security detail in place for the duration of La Pasión. Organisers expressed their delight at the success of this year’s representation and congratulated all those who took part not forgetting those who work tireless backstage as well, on an event that has achieved a huge cultural standing in Adeje, inviting them all to return to take part in 2015.

Many who were present in the audience will have already uploaded photographs and videos online at #pasiondeadeje2015.

The greatest story every told: The Passion of Jesus Christ

LA PASION ADEJE 14 8153

Channel 2, Television Española will broadcast Adeje’s La Pasión live Friday April 3rd

This Good Friday, April 3rd, Adeje council, through the department of Culture, with councillor Nayra Medina Bethencourt at the helm, present the greatest story ever told – the Passion of Jesus Christ – staging the last days and death of Jesus of Nazareth.  The event will be broadcast live on Channel 2, TVE (Television España), on the local radio station, Radio Sur Adeje, 107.98fm, Radio Nacional España and and live streaming via www.adeje.es/pasion.

Councillor Medina Bethencourt commented, “more than 300 people will be taking part as amateur actors in the staging of the story, the vast majority of them people from different parts of the borough who sign up year after year to take part in what is an important element of our local culture”.

LA PASION ADEJE 14 7752

For the third year running the scene of the crucifixion will be in the Plaza España.  The councillor noted that “with the change of location and stages, which we did for the first time two years ago we achieved the desired affect, which was to create a panoramic setting  for the final setting which we get with the Plaza, the church, the Convento and the Barranco del Infierno as a backdrop”.  There is also more room for the public to watch the final scene of La Pasión with the change to the Plaza.

The councillor remarked that La Pasión is a major event for Adeje, “the people of the borough feel very much that this is their event, and return to participate year after year.  This year we have more than 300 people taking part in this important international event, something very different, very unique.

LA PASION ADEJE 14 7872

“As well as the participation of local residents there are other groups and individuals from other parts of the island who will be here, from the north, from the island capital, or the many who come from other towns and villages to play their part”.

Regarding the live broadcast of the event, Medina Bethencourt said that it was “an amazing showcase to the world, an excellent promotional tool and gives added value to the destination, a classic ‘sun and beach’ one, but a place that, with events of this quality, stands out in the tourism market place and offers the tourist something different, something more..”

Changes in 2015

The most notable changes this year are in the Herod and Pontius Pilate staging areas, costumes, and some upgrades to the Jerusalem marketplace, recreating the ambiance of the era.  The participation of the Municipal School of Music and Dance as Herod’s dancers is noteworthy and new too will be the dance performed by the Beanky Ballet on the stage where the Last Supper will take place. The script has also been changed and is more intense.  All of the music is also written by members of the Municipal School of Music and Dance (EMMA), incorporating some traditional Canarian musical themes and instruments – the timple, cháracas, the drum, airs and dances.

The whole of the Calle Grande, from the Plaza de la Cruz del Llano to the Plaza España, will be a stage dressed to resemble the time of Our Lord, with plants, cloths, sculptures and alters, etc.   And in the staging area with live farm animals the backdrop resembles the Canarian countryside.

During and afterwards, for those following the event, they can upload their photographs and videos to #pasionadeje2015, helping give the event greater visibility.

Security during the event will be provided by a group of Adeje local police, members of the civil protection unit and civil protection volunteers and the voluntary Adeje fire brigade.

Live La Pasión 2014

Interested in taking part in the hugely popular annual street theatre in Adeje on Good Friday, La Pasión? Registration is now open.

The councillor for culture, Nayra Medina Bethencourt, has announced that registration is now open for anyone who would like to take part in La Pasión 2014, the theatrical representation which celebrates the final days and death of Jesus of Nazareth, celebrated every Good Friday in Adeje.
The councillor explained that “each year we are delighted to see a huge level of participation from people who live in Adeje and other nearby towns and villages and we are opening the registration now so that people will have time to sign up and attend rehearsals in the days leading up to the event”.
Nayra added, “La Pasión has become a hugely important part of the cultural calendar for Adeje’s people who, year after year, put so much time and effort into making this ‘Way of the Cross’ a special event. And we here in the Council understand the value that people place on this important part of Easter celebrations”.
Interested persons who wish to take part in La Pasión, which has achieved international recognition in recent years, and is broadcast live in the Canary Islands on Television Español and on TV2 at national level, should go along to the Cultural Centre in the town between 8am and 9pm to sign up, or call 922756246.
If younger members of your family wish to take part, and remember you don’t have to speak a huge amount of Spanish to participate, anyone under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
Don’t wait for others to tell you about it afterwards! Come and live it for yourselves.

A Guide to Good Friday in Adeje

pasion_adeje

Thanks to the Adejemegusta blog, here is a guide to the best way to enjoy the presentation of The Passion in Adeje on Good Friday.

Anyone who has been to the town centre on this special day will tell you that it’s a highly emotional, extremely popular event with thousands of Adejeros and visitors crowding the Calle Grande to watch the action unfold and follow the representation on the street.  And to fully enjoy and appreciate the event it’s best to prepare your visit in advance.

The first thing to note is that this year the action goes up the main street, starting at the Plaza de la Cruz del Llano at about midday and will finish about two hours later at the Plaza de España with the crucifixion taking place on the main stage with the glorious Barranco del Infierno (what an impressive backdrop) and the Roque del Conde behind the action.

Before you leave home make sure you have comfortable shoes, kids have sun protection and sun hats, you have enough water to drink, and don’t forget your camera. But don’t bring a full bag as you will be carrying it for a number of hours.

While there will be parking in designated spots, if possible take the bus or get someone to drop you into the town beforehand.  If you are driving there will be parking at the Correos post office, near the start of the procession and at the Calle Piedra Redonda, down the street from the end point of the action.  There are also three parking zones behind the Cultural Centre.  However these will fill up quickly, so the earlier the better.  Certainly if you are hopìng to park near the Calle Grande I would recommend that you arrive by 10.30.

Once in Adeje it’s hard to suggest one particular ideal spot.  Planning or hoping to follow all the action as it moves up the street, with over 300 actors taking part at various stages and thousands following the action will be practically impossible.  Certainly the more dramatic set pieces will be the Last Supper, the meeting between Jesus and Mary Magdalene, the scene with Pontius Pilate, and the highly charged meeting of Jesus with his mother.  An elevated viewing point will be an advantage – maybe finding a point on the steps of the church would be a good idea and watch the procession work its way up the street. Another alternative is persuading friends who have apartments on the Calle Grande to let you view the event from the street – but only the very few are that lucky!

Whereever you do end up you will no doubt be caught up in the emotion of the event and the tremendous performances of those taking part.

Live The Passion, feel The Passion.
