dia internacional contra la homofobia y transfobia (1)The Adeje council is marking International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia which takes place on May 17th. The department of equality, under councillor Juan Desiderio Agonso Ruiz, has designed a programme of events called “Adeje, respecting sexual diversity, Diverse Adeje”. The object of the events is to continue to raise awareness among the local population regarding the realities of sexual diversity and at the same time demonstrate the utter rejection of any form of discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation or gender identity.

According to councillor Afonso Ruiz “among the aims of the department, which are also part of the ‘I Equal Opportunities Strategic Plan’ for the men and women of Adeje, is the advancement of the premise that we must work to ensure the elimination of discrimination in this field”.

Among the events planned are workshops in awareness raising in secondary schools in the borough. At the same time the “De Igual a Igual” (Like for Like) programme which is broadcast on Radio Sur will start a debate, led by Patricia G. Ojeda sociologist, Equal Opportunities and LGTB Assessor, followed by a group from the Adeje secondary schools.

“Tardes para ti”, (Afternoons for You) will see a talk take place tomorrow, Thursday May 15th, in the Adeje Cultural Centre on sexual diversity.

On Friday May 16th a manifesto will be issued and left for the public to read on the steps of the Town Hall until 3pm. There is also a special area in the library in the Adeje Cultural Centre dedicated to literature on and by lesbians, gays, transsexuals, bisexuals, intersexuals and LGTBI.

“These actions are promoting values relating to equality and respecting differences as basic and fundamental for co-existence and our work will continue in this regard through education and awareness raising”, said Councillor Afonso Ruiz.
