Looking after those in need

In recent days the Adeje council signed a contract for the provision of non-perishable foods and essential products to assist families in need or/and at risk of social exclusion in the borough.

The new agreement is designed to offer immediate help. “With this new initiative we are offering an emergency assistance service dealing, above all, with those needing food and personal hygiene products” commented the Adeje social welfare councillor, Isabel Fernández González, adding that the service will also be working to address the reasons behind the emergency situation people find themselves in and that place them at the risk of social exclusion.

Items that will be provided will include rice, cereals, flour, and food stuffs in jars/tins such as jams, beans, and hygienic products such as soap, nappies, shower gel, toothbrushes and toothpaste, etc. According to the councillor with this new agreement the have a two-year stock of products for those in need of urgent and immediate attention.

The Fair takes place on Saturday May 16th and Sunday May 17th in the town’s Plaza España

The Adeje Arts and Crafts Fair, organised by the local department of culture, will focus on work in woodcraft this year, with demonstrations in other specialities also scheduled over the weekend of May 16th and 17th in the town’s Plaza España.

From 10am in the morning to 9pm on both days there will be a series of activities open to the public, with activities for young children scheduled for the morning hours, craft workshops with trained monitors from the Convivencia project.

Music will also feature during the two day event with performances from Grupo Boleros from Armeñime on Saturday at 12.30, and students and musicians from the Adeje Folklore school from 7pm. On Sunday the Parranda from Grupo Boca del Paso will entertain the public in the morning and that evening José Manuel Ramos will perform ‘Desde adentro’ at 8pm.

The Adeje Arts and Crafts Fair has been an annual event since 2000, with over 100 stalls selling Canarian crafts and hand-made goods to the public, made by artists and artisans not just from Adeje but from all over Tenerife and the other Canarian Islands. Many of the stalls celebrate the use of traditional craft methods, using materials such as wicker, wood, glass, resin and fabric, producing a range of items for sale including traditional clothing, jewellery, carpets and hangings, musical instruments, and food items such as honey and cheeses and a firm favourite, the traditional biscuits and cakes.

Adeje Schools Fight Obesity

The PIPO programme, a programme for intervention in the prevention of child obesity

The Adeje council and the regional department of health in collaboration with the national office of public health, put the PIPO programme into operation in schools during the 2013-2014 school term, a programme that uses intervention in the prevention of child obesity, promoting healthy eating habits and physical activity. The programme has been running in the borough’s public primary schools.

Adeje’s mayor, José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, along with councillors for health, social welfare, and education – Rafael Dolado, Amada Trujillo Bencomo and Andrés Pérez Ramos – met the person responsible for the project, Rosa Gloria Suárez López de Vergara, a doctor specialising in paediatrics and childcare with the national office of public health, who congratulated the Adeje council for introducing this kind of project which, “works to improve the health of the younger population”.

Mayor Rodríguez Fraga commented, “in Adeje we are very concerned about the health and lifestyle habits of our citizens, in particular the younger people, and for them these kind of projects that are based in schools are very relevant. We understand that training, prevention and rapid intervention where necessary are important elements as are healthy eating habits and regular physical exercise among other practises”.

The importance of this programme is a reflection of the gravity of the existence of overweight children and adolescents in the Canary Islands. Intervention in schools is happening through a series of theoretical and practical workshops, with sessions to give students a greater awareness of what healthy eating habits are and why they are important and why physical exercise should be an integral part of their daily lives, according to the PIPO directors. The training programme is also directed at parents whose involvement in the programme is essential to reinforce the message learnt in school at home.

The programme was operational from May 13 – June 13 in the six infants and primary public schools in the borough with the participation of 304 students. It was carried out as a curricular activity, the students learning to recognise where food comes from, how it is processed and prepared, etc. In parallel children learnt how many times a day they should be eating food from each of the food groups using the food pyramid model.

Students in the programme showed high levels of interest in learning about healthy eating and were happy to take part in the different exercise activities. Finally there were asked to become health representatives in their schools and at home and given educational material to help them teach others.

The PIPO programme was first introduced in 2012 with references to the World Health Organisation strategies in the field of infant obesity prevention, and the national programmes for the health promotion and illness prevention. Other bodies directly involved, alongside the Adeje council, the regional and national departments of health and the regional government include the University of La Laguna, the European Action for Health programme, and the Adeje department for economic development and employment through the ‘Actívate’ programme, as well as the six education centres involved

Arts & Crafts in Adeje

Adeje-XIII Feria de Artesania (30)

Adeje’s Plaza de España hosts the annual Arts & Crafts fair tomorrow, Saturday May 17th and Sunday May 18th, with a series of parallel events taking place in the Plaza and around the town.

Over 70 stands will be in place, most of them displaying arts and craft wares or food produce. The Cruz Roja, the Cabildo ‘Recíclope’ campaign and the Los Olivos Centre will also have stands, as well the Adeje Clean and Healthy promotion which will mark the end of this particular campaign.

According to the councillor for culture, Nayra Medina Bethencourt, “the Arts & Crafts fair is a very important event for Adeje and provides a showcase for traditional handicrafts from the island”.
Stands will show and sell everything from ornaments, clothing, jewellery, toys and dolls, woodwork, glassware, and paintings. Visitors will also have the opportunity to taste cakes, biscuits and other local delicacies including island honey, breads, cheeses, and much more.

The fair is open to the public from 10am to 9pm on Saturday and 10am to 8pm on Sunday with free entry. During the two days there will also be a number of folklore performances by Isogue, the Boleros de Armeñime, the Imoque Cultural Association and the Municipal School of Folklore.

In parallel the council will also be congratulating the winners of the schools pets photo competition, which was part of the Adeje Clean and Healthy campaign. Children will receive their prize on Saturday in the Plaza de España after a short puppet show by the Garabato company who have toured local schools with the show. There will also be a small mural prepared by children visiting the fair under the supervision of the Cruz Roja.
Other activities taking place around the town include an exhibition of hunting dogs in the section of ground opposite El Galeón as you drive into Adeje from the motorway. This is happening at 12 noon on Saturday and is open to the public. On Sunday, at noon, in the Plaza de España there will also be a demonstration from the owners and dogs who have been taking part in the council’s Dog Obedience classes in recent months.
