Foodie fusions, tastings and tapas!

The Adeje department of economic development and job creation, under Councillor Manuel Méndez Martin, launched the November gastronomy programme this morning, the 9th year the event is taking place. Degusta.Me or ‘Taste Me’ promotes the richness and variety of local produce and culinary creations, showing why our gastronomy has become an integral part of the international profile of this part of Tenerife.

The main goal of the month-long programme of activities has always been to promote the culture of gastronomy in Adeje, valuing the establishments dedicated to good food, the people who run them and serve the public as well as the food itself, which, altogether, “without a doubt bring a large amount of added value to the tourist offer in the region”, said councillor Méndez Martín.

The Calle Grande and the Plaza de España will host a 8-hour event on November 24th, a food festival open to the public with tastings, drink, theatre, bouncy castles, acrobats, jugglers, live music, etc.

As in previous years the Tapas Route invites the public to vote for their favourite tapa from any of the 20 restaurants taking part using the forms in the participating establishments which must be stamped – and their votes will also see them entered into a draw for a selection of great prizes included an 7-day cruise courtesy of the ‘Zona Comercial Abierta Adeje Centro’.

During November there will be visits organised to the Montesdeoca cheese farm and the Finca Noel. The Food Trucks On Tour is also returning. Full details of the month’s activities and the tapas route can be downloaded, in English, from the Adeje council webpage (http://www.adeje.es/degustame/descargas). Members of the public who are interested in taking part in any of the courses and workshops that require prior registration should sign up soon as places will be limited.

Good enough to eat!

Edible tourism is the theme at Culinaria 2018

The Culinaria 2018 event was launched yesterday in Adeje, and will see the coming together of some of gastronomy’s top Spanish and Michelin stars over the coming days.

Organised by Acyre Canarias (the association of Canarian chefs and pastry makers) in partnership with the Adeje Council, the Tenerife Cabildo and the regional government, the 2,700 places available for events in the busy three days calendar are already booked. The president of the association, Pablo Pastor, told press at the inauguration that “expectations have been superseded”. He thanked everyone for taking part, the sponsors and supporting institutional bodies, adding that he hoped the event would encourage hotels and restaurants too. Acyre vice-president Juan Carlos Clemente said “Culinaria 2018 is committed to use of local produce”, adding that bringing together top chefs from the islands and outside should add to the promotion of that produce.

(Foto: @CarlosGuanche)

For Adeje, the councillor for economic development Manuel Luis Méndez Martín emphasised the importance of gastronomy in a first class tourism destination such as Costa Adeje, “the Town Hall recognises that gastronomy is a fundamentally important part of the tourism offer, complementing the ‘sun, sea and beach’ attractions.” He encouraged people to continue to organise events such as this one “where training and the presence of recognised professionals improves the quality and excellence of the service”. He commented that there is an ever increasing demand for good local produce, and of course an emphasis on local gastronomy also creates more employment in the sector.

(Foto: @CarlosGuanche)

For his part, Alberto Barnabé Teja, the Cabildo tourism councillor, congratulated the private sector for organising the event. “There are still millions of visitors who have yet to discover our local gastronomy and produce so there is a still a lot of work to do”. He said “the slogan for the event. “El turismo que se come” (translated, ‘tourism you can eat’) was an excellent choice, with the challenge being to convert tourists through their palate. In Tenerife we have 42 million overnight stays, which is also breakfast, lunches and dinners, a year. That’s 126 million chances to feed our tourists, so it’s a responsibility and an opportunity”.

Narvay Quintero Castañeda, the regional minister for agriculture, said they were looking forward to three intense days of work with local produce at the core of the event, “something we see as extremely positive as we recognise that linking this to a primary sector such as tourism and relevant other sectors has far-reaching benefits, as we can sell fresh produce locally.

(Foto: @CarlosGuanche)

During the inauguration a new television programme, “El Chef Viajero” (the travelling chef) was also unveiled. To be broadcast in the Canary Islands and the rest of Spain as well as a number of other European countries, the show would feature Spanish chefs travelling to the different Canarian islands in search of local gastronomic delights.

During the three days of Culinaria 2018, being held in the CDTCA in Adeje, there will be talks, workshops and demonstrations. Those taking part include, Miguel Navarro, restaurant Es Fum (Mallorca), 1 Michelin*, Andrea Bernardi and Fernanda Fuentes, Restaurant Nub (Tenerife) 1 Michelin *, Oliver Peña, Restaurant Enigma (Barcelona) 1 Michelin *, Erlantz Gorostiza, Restaurant MB Abama (Tenerife) 2 Michelin*, 2 Repsol Suns, Susi Díaz, Restaurant La Finca (Elche) 1 Michelin *, 2 Repsol Suns, Javier Aguiar, Restaurant Tickets (Barcelona) 1 Michelin *, Juan Carlos Padrón and Jonathan Padrón, Restaurant El Rincón de Juan Carlos. (Tenerife) 1 Michelin *, 2 Repsol Suns.

Adeje-XIII Feria de Artesania (30)

Adeje’s Plaza de España hosts the annual Arts & Crafts fair tomorrow, Saturday May 17th and Sunday May 18th, with a series of parallel events taking place in the Plaza and around the town.

Over 70 stands will be in place, most of them displaying arts and craft wares or food produce. The Cruz Roja, the Cabildo ‘Recíclope’ campaign and the Los Olivos Centre will also have stands, as well the Adeje Clean and Healthy promotion which will mark the end of this particular campaign.

According to the councillor for culture, Nayra Medina Bethencourt, “the Arts & Crafts fair is a very important event for Adeje and provides a showcase for traditional handicrafts from the island”.
Stands will show and sell everything from ornaments, clothing, jewellery, toys and dolls, woodwork, glassware, and paintings. Visitors will also have the opportunity to taste cakes, biscuits and other local delicacies including island honey, breads, cheeses, and much more.

The fair is open to the public from 10am to 9pm on Saturday and 10am to 8pm on Sunday with free entry. During the two days there will also be a number of folklore performances by Isogue, the Boleros de Armeñime, the Imoque Cultural Association and the Municipal School of Folklore.

In parallel the council will also be congratulating the winners of the schools pets photo competition, which was part of the Adeje Clean and Healthy campaign. Children will receive their prize on Saturday in the Plaza de España after a short puppet show by the Garabato company who have toured local schools with the show. There will also be a small mural prepared by children visiting the fair under the supervision of the Cruz Roja.
Other activities taking place around the town include an exhibition of hunting dogs in the section of ground opposite El Galeón as you drive into Adeje from the motorway. This is happening at 12 noon on Saturday and is open to the public. On Sunday, at noon, in the Plaza de España there will also be a demonstration from the owners and dogs who have been taking part in the council’s Dog Obedience classes in recent months.
